Press Release:

Journey of Enrichment distributes food parcels, blankets and soup – brings winter relief

2 August 2018

Journey of Enrichment (JOE), a registered NPO based in Schaapkraal, has provided much-needed winter relief by distributing 1500 servings of soup and handing out 270 blankets to underprivileged communities in the Athlone, Delft, Grassy Park, Phillippi, Steenberg , Manenberg, Netreg and Mitchell’s Plain areas.

During the month of June, over 200 food parcels containing 28 essential items such as oats, rice, fish oil and a variety of tinned items were packed and distributed as well. The NPO, referred to as JOE (NPO 149-176), runs various events throughout the year which features a cooking event, a food parcel drive, a winter drive (soup & blankets) as well as an International Children’s Day event.  Their next event will be held on 9 August, which coincides with Women’s Month. This event will see them collect donations of feminine hygiene products and distribute them through their network of community leaders who identify individuals or schools in need.

JOE relies mainly on donations – whether monetary or in kind – which is coordinated with their annual event schedule outlining event dates and venues. Mrs. Yassira Sallie, Secretary of JOE, says, “We have a dedicated volunteer-base who have supported our cause since our inception as a feeding scheme. We would so much like to increase our impact in the community but we require more hands to assist us, especially when we have a cooking event. In addition, the more donations received, the further we can distribute the necessary food relief.”

Originally established as a feeding scheme in 2009, Journey of Enrichment’s main purpose is to, ‘Feed the Body – Enhance the Mind – Empower the People’. The NPO aims to break the cycle of poverty and unemployment. While it still keeps to its feeding scheme roots, ideally they want to branch into youth empowerment initiatives through education and sport. JOE was established by the family and friends of Yusuf ‘Joe’ Abrahams after his untimely passing in 2007.

The most meals JOE has ever distributed in a single event was over 2000 meals at their Snack Pack event in July 2014. The packs included fruit, juice, sandwiches and various luxuries.
